Acne is a major skin issue especially in youths, causing major cosmetic & psychological problems that may affect the rest of a sufferer's life. 9 out of every 10 adolescents will suffer from acne.
The cause of acne involves many factors. Hair grows out of "holes" in the skin (Skin Pores). Hidden in these "holes" are some glands (Sebaceous Glands) that pump sweat & some oily stuff called sebum. Too much sebum, blockage of these holes and a germ called P. acnes all contribute to causing Acne . Heredity & puberty may cause excessive sebum production.
Acne occurs mostly in sebum-rich areas (face, chest & back) as "whiteheads", "blackheads", painful
swellings or small "boils". Severe forms of Acne can cause bad scars which may affect self-esteem. Rare forms may even cause fever, bone & joint pains.
In black Africans, use of petroleum jelly and some "normal" soaps on the face and chest may contribute to Acne. It may also worsen before menses.
Acne usually improves on its own over years but may leave scars or continue into adulthood. Hence, the need for early treatment! The aim of treating Acne is to reduce sebum, remove the germ & prevent scars. Regular washing with special Acne soaps (eg sebamed) is recommended. For mild cases, doctors may give creams that gently peel off the skin, or contain Vitamin A-like substance. Antibiotic creams are often prescribed.
Note: In the absence of special Acne soaps, face cleansers or methylated spirit (add an equal amount of water) can be used to remove sebum.
For more severe Acne, doctors may prescribe oral antibiotics or even oral contraceptives pills (suitable females only!). Oral Acne drugs enter the blood (not just d skin), so must be prescribed by a professional & used exactly as directed to reduce side-effects.
